ACTAA is excited to announce details for its annual summer workshop, July 18-20-20210. Virtually hosted due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, the 2021 Summer Workshop will offer several live sessions via Zoom conference technology.

Committing the association to developing a more inclusive speech and debate community, will be the focus of this year’s Summer Workshop. As an organization historically dedicated to facilitating the freedom of expression and thought of Arkansas’ students, the 2021 Summer Workshop hopes to provide intentional opportunities for members, as educators, to address how ACTAA can promote inclusivity amongst our profession and activity.

The three-day conference features 20 sessions of professional development (with tracks for New Teachers, Oral Communication, Debate, Forensics, and Theater educators), public forums for competition events, sessions for associational business, and several opportunities for networking with educators from across the state at various stages of experience. Whether you’re a new teacher or coach looking for resources, learning more about these disciplines, or an experienced coach refining your skills, you’ll make meaningful connections with other communication educators who you can collaborate with throughout the year.

ACTAA is an approved Professional Development provider for the Arkansas Department of Education.

Inclusion and Engagement Workshop
In addition to “traditional” workshop sessions addressing competition and associational amendments, this year’s Summer Workshop will utilize time to workshop pragmatic strategies to better promote diversity in the association and create a more inclusive professional and educational environment in our state. At the 2020 Fall Conference, the Executive Council established the Diversity, Inclusion, and Ethics Committee to develop a working plan to improve inclusivity within the association. These workshops are recommended to involve the whole membership and support the Diversity, Inclusion, and Ethics Committee to develop a series of pragmatic strategies for its working plan.

Each workshop will be a breakout session, where attendees will be challenged to brainstorm and develop goals and pragmatic strategies in a collaborative process for how ACTAA can be more inclusive and positively engage with a specific membership demographic. Following break-out workshops, there will be report-out sessions, where proposals from the focused workshops are shared with the entire attendee group for further input and comments. This proposal suggests the following themes for inclusion & engagement workshops:

- Student engagement

- Alumni inclusion & engagement

- LGBTQ+ inclusion & engagement

- Professionals of Color inclusion & engagement

- New member engagement & mentoring

- Diversity & inclusion Communication plan
